Introduction
I am a Final Year Undergraduate Psychology Student at the University of Surrey. I would like to invite you to take part in a research project. Before you decide whether you would like to be involved, please take the time to read the following information carefully. You may talk to others about the study if you wish.

What is the purpose of the study?
This study seeks to find out whether there are changes in sleep patterns, sleepiness and daily activity following stroke, which are not due to changes over time.

Why have I been invited to take part in the study?
You have been invited to take part in this study for one of two reasons. Either:

  1. You have had a stroke in the last five years, and I would like to find out more about any changes to sleep you have experienced since your stroke.
  2. You have not had a stroke, and I would like to find out more about changes to sleep you have experienced over time.

Do I have to take part?
No, you do not have to participate. There will be no adverse consequences if you decide not to participate. You can withdraw at any time without giving a reason. This study will not be suitable for participants who:

What will happen to me if I take part?
You will be asked to complete a selection of questionnaires, which can be found by following the links at the top and bottom of this page.

What are the possible disadvantages or risks of taking part?
There are no anticipated risks for taking part. There are a series of questionnaires to complete which may take some time. If you do experience trouble with your sleep, a summary of appropriate support available to you can be found in the information booklet here "how to cope with sleep problems.pdf" [this will open a new window or you can right click on the link and save the pdf].

What are the possible benefits of taking part?
It is unlikely that you will benefit directly. It is hoped that the results from the study will explore whether people who have had a stroke experience any change in their sleep differently than people who have not had a stroke.

What happens when the research study stops?
When the research study stops a summary of the findings will be available, which I can send out to you via email. If you would like to receive this then please contact me from the 5th of May, 2015, and I will send these out to you. My contact email address is sl00223@surrey.ac.uk

What if there is a problem?
Complaints or concerns about any aspect of the way you have been dealt with during the course of the study will be addressed; please contact Sophie Light via email at sl00223@surrey.ac.uk

Will my taking part in the study be kept confidential?
Yes. All of the information you give will be kept anonymous so that those reading reports from the research will not know who has contributed to it.
Data will be stored securely in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998.
Data is stored for 10 years, in line with University Policy. The data is stored securely and confidentially.
